Climate Positivity: Creating Outsized Impact

Session Summary

What are your thoughts and emotions about climate change? For most people it is a sense of being overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the issue. Recent heatwaves cause fear and a sense of powerlessness.

Younger generations are angry or depressed. Climate Positivity starts from understanding the actual situation: the size of the problem, what causes greenhouse gases, and what already works to mitigate and reverse our emissions.

There are powerful and impactful things we can do, specifically at the level of organizations and companies. In this interactive session, Karim shows you how to find these breakthrough approaches, discuss and implement them, and become climate positive, to shape a future with a thriving humanity on a thriving planet.

Interaction

This is an interactive session in which Karim puts several questions to the audience. Participants share their own thoughts and emotions about climate change, identify where their profession and their organization have outsized impact, and choose a first climate-positive action to take into their work environment. Q&A at the end.

Key Learnings

Everything contributes to the problem, so everything is part of the solution . Many solutions to mitigate or reverse greenhouse gas emissions exist and are being developed; the task is deploying them at scale as quickly as possible. Everyone has a role to play in this.

Detailed session description

Climate change is the first truly global problem, and the standard response is to do less: fly less, eat less meat, use less energy. That buys us time, but it does not get us there, and it leaves people in denial, angry, or depressed.

Karim starts with the honest picture: how large the problem is, what the carbon budget looks like, and the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions. The key realization is that everything contributes to the problem, from energy and construction to logistics, food and cooling, and so everything is also part of the solution.

The good news is that the solutions largely exist. Millions of dedicated people are working on them, from startups to global companies. The important thing now is to speed up their deployment at scale in energy, construction, logistics, and all other sectors.

Every company is involved through the products it makes, what it procures, and the arrangements it makes with its stakeholders. Organizations can have enormous impact, and professionals have far more impact through their work than through their private consumption choices.

Doing things individually matters; doing them as organizations has impact on a completely different scale, from thousands to millions of times as much.

Karim gives inspiring examples of people who made outsized contributions to reducing greenhouse gases by thinking at this professional and systemic level: an engineering team whose invention saved a truly mind-boggling amount of emissions, a young chemist producing zero-carbon cement, a bank pricing sustainable farming practices into loans, a satellite team finding methane leaks. Each of them worked from their own expertise and with their own organization to achieve this outsized impact.

The session ends with every participant finding out what Climate Positivity would mean for their own professional role and sector, committing to a first step to discuss this in their work environment, and leaving ready to experiment with new approaches.

Awesome speech: Valuable content clearly presented.?
In answer to “Any other feedback?”
It has been very inspiring and very instructive. Thank you so much
In answer to “What have you learned?”
Actual carbon emissions lower than i thought. need to fact check the stories more. thanks for pointing at the data websites.
In answer to “What have you learned?”
I appreciated a lot the fact the I attended this session as it was very well structured
In answer to “Any other feedback?”
I enjoyed that session very much
In answer to “Any other feedback?”
Very clear story. The session made me aware of all the smallest actions you can do to have a positive influence on the climate.
In answer to “What have you learned?”
Clear presentation; it made me think about what I actually do to support our planet .
In answer to “Any other feedback?”
I think it is good to raise awareness on where we can help and do something about climate change and that it is not all about feeling bad about how we messed up in the past.

Questions about Climate Positivity: Creating Outsized Impact

Is this session interactive, or do people just watch?

It is interactive, and the block above says exactly how for this session. Nobody has to speak up who does not want to: the chat and the polls carry most of it, and the questions can come in anonymously.

Is this for beginners or for people who already know the subject?

What are your thoughts and emotions about climate change? For most people it is a sense of being overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the issue. It is built for a general working audience: no prior knowledge is assumed, and people who already know the subject get the research and the practical side rather than an introduction.

Is Karim the right expert for this?

Karim Benammar is one of the experts we auditioned ourselves, and we produce every session so we see how each one lands. Participants rate this session 4.3 out of 5, across 2,305 responses, and rate Karim personally 4.5 out of 5.

How long does it take, and what do we have to prepare?

It runs 45 min / 15 min: the talk, then live questions. All you do is pick a date. We brief Karim, produce the session, host and moderate it, run the Q&A, and send you the report within an hour of the end.

Who can join, and where does it run?

A team, a department, an employee network or every single employee at once, with no cap and no per-seat price. It runs inside your own Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Google Meet, or on a branded page we build. No integration, no login, no company device or e-mail.

Can our global colleagues follow it?

The session is delivered in English, Dutch. You can add high accuracy live subtitles in 8, 16 or 24 languages, so everyone follows in their own. That is a paid option, priced by the number of languages you need.

Will our IT department have a problem with this?

No, and that is by design. There is nothing to install, nothing to integrate and no connection to your systems, so there is nothing for IT to validate: we join your own Teams, Zoom or Meet as a guest speaker, or we host a page and your people open a link. No software, no accounts, and no data of yours that we can reach. It is why hundreds of companies, among them some of the largest technology and financial firms in the world, were able to start within a day.

How does this work under GDPR?

We never receive or hold personal data about your employees. Because the session runs in your own environment, attendance and identity stay with you, and what we report back is aggregated: numbers, ratings and survey answers, not people. That is also why IT approval usually takes minutes rather than weeks.

What do we get afterwards?

You keep the recording and can share it internally. You also get attendance over time, participant ratings for the content and the speaker, the survey answers, and the topics your people asked for next.
